Windows 7 support will end on 14th January 2020

Back in 2009 Microsoft released Windows 7, which has arguably been their most successful operating system to date running many businesses PC’s, laptop and tablets for nearly 10 years. As with all technology, there’s a time to retire outdated systems and invest in newer technology which provides the user a better experience.

What does this mean for me right now?

First of all, don’t panic! Until the 14th January 2020 your Windows PC or Laptop is still updated and protected by Microsoft updates.

What should I do now?

Start planning your upgrade route. Generally if your PC’s or laptops are around 3 years old or older it’s time to look at purchasing a new device. This is the most cost effective way of moving to Windows 10 because all new PC’s and laptops come with Windows 10 installed and licensed, plus you’re on hardware designed to make the most of the Windows 10 Operating System.

What if I want to upgrade my existing device?

If your device is fit and healthy, upgrading using the full Windows 10 product is possible. Because this version of Windows 10 is bought as a standalone license it will cost more to buy so this is something to weigh up against replacing rather than upgrading.

What happens if I continue to use Windows 7?

After this date your device won’t be updated which means as time passes it’s more susceptible to cyber attacks and other malicious software. While other systems may be in place to help protect against these threats, your PC or Laptop will ultimately be a weak link which can be exploited.

Will internet explorer and other applications continue to work?

Internet Explorer won’t be updated after the 14th January 2020, so if you’re using that as your web browser any browsing you do won’t be fully secured against website with active malicious software or website that have been compromised. Other 3rd party application for the most part will continue to work but over time vendors will stop supporting Windows 7 because of the security vulnerabilities.
